Cupcake Decorating Ideas: Tropical Beach
Need some cupcake decorating ideas for a summer party? Try these fun-in-the-sun printable cupcake toppers. These cupcake toppers are an easy way to turn ordinary cupcakes into a tropical paradise for your party. We made our cupcakes look like a sandy beach and we used some sugar wafer cookies for the palm tree and the flamingo for some added fun.
• Lollipop sticks, popsicle sticks, straws or wooden skewers
• Cupcakes
• Yellow frosting
• Brown sugar
• Sugar wafer cookies
• Tape or glue
• Scissors
• Optional: small white mint balls
• Cupcake topper templates
The first step is to make your cupcakes look like a sandy beach. To do this, start by covering your cupcakes in yellow frosting. Now take some brown sugar and sprinkle it on top to create the look of sand. Or you might want to simply dip each frosted cupcake into a bowl of brown sugar. This will give it a more completely covered look of sand.
Next you will need to print and cut out the Cupcake topper templates. Tape each topper (except for the flamingos and palm trees) to lollipop sticks, toothpicks, straws etc. Now they are ready to be stuck into the cupcakes. For the sunshine topper, we taped it to a long wooden skewer so it could be higher than the rest.
To make the flamingos body, use a serrated knife to cut the sugar wafer cookies into oval-like shapes as shown in the photo. Be careful as you gently slice through the cookie. You don’t want to push the knife down or the cookie might crack. If one side of the wafer cookie pops off, you can “glue” it back together with a little frosting.
For the trunk of the palm trees, you will similarly slice the cookie, only this time just slice off two sides at an angle to create a triangular piece. Again, if one side falls off, just use frosting to put it back together.
When putting together both the heads of the flamingos and the tops of the palm trees, you will want to be sure to cut out two of the mirror images so you can tape them back to back, making them double sided. Then, to secure them in the cookie, gently slide the edge of the paper into the frosting center of the wafer.
For the legs of the flamingo, place two toothpicks into the bottom of the flamingo cookie, into the frosting, as you did for the head. Be gentle, as too much force will pop the cookie apart.
Optional: If you want to add a few “pearls” to the cupcakes with the seashell toppers, then use small white mint balls, or other round white candy. Just place them at the base of each shell.
Your fun-in-the-sun cupcakes are now done!
