Easy To Make Bird Feeder
Turn a cute teacup and saucer into an easy to make bird feeder. We will show you step-by-step how you or even your kids can make this homemade bird feeder. Then once you know how to make your own bird feeder from a simple teacup, you could have a whimsical tea party for all your feathered friends. How cute would that be! We made one for bird seed and one as a bird bath. You could also make several as gifts. This homemade bird feeder could make a really fun summer craft project for you or your kids. So head on over to your local thrift store, snatch up some colorful cups and saucers, and feed all your little birdie friends in style this summer!
- Teacup and saucer (We used over-sized teacups, found at a second-hand store)
- PVC pipe (1/2″ or 3/4″) in any desired length. Ours is 4′
- PVC cap (1/2″ or 3/4″)
- Strong glue (E-6000)
- Sandpaper
- Bird seed
Lightly sand all areas that will be glued. This will help achieve a stronger bond. Areas to be sanded:
Bottom rim of cup Top of saucer where cup will sit
Small center spot on bottom of saucer Top of PVC cap
Apply glue along the bottom rim of the teacup where it will touch the saucer. If you are using E-6000 glue, also apply glue on the inner saucer ring.
Now firmly press the teacup into place on its saucer. While the cup and saucer are drying it would be a good idea to add a little weight to help give it a nice tight bond.
Note: Let dry at least 3 – 4 hours before carefully turning the cup and saucer over for step 4.
Apply glue to the top of the cap and if using E-6000, also to the bottom center of the saucer. Then firmly press the cap to the bottom of the saucer. This time let it completely dry for at least 24 hours.
Optional: Cut the pipe end at an angle so it will hammer into the ground a little easier. Or hammer a piece of rebar into the ground first for stability, and then slip the PVC pipe over it.
Once the pipe is in the ground, place the cap that’s on the bottom of the saucer over the pipe. Now just add the bird seed and your teacup bird feeders are done!
Optional: You could also add a spoon to the saucer for added charm!
Since the teacup and saucer are removable from their post, it makes it great for easy cleaning or bringing it inside if it’s going to rain.
A Note About Bird Seed: The all-around best bird seed for this type of feeder would be black oil sunflower seeds. A wide variety of birds prefer this type of seed. Avoid the cheap commercial mixed bird seed. They have a high percentage of the less-appealing “filler” seeds.
