Free Halloween Printables: Coffin Treat Box
My mom and I designed this coffin treat box because we needed to bring a fun dessert to a family Halloween party. We came up with the idea to have brownie skeletons in a coffin but we could not find any coffin box templates big enough to hold a thick brownie, so we created our own. We created our box so that it would be deep enough and long enough for our brownie skeletons to fit nicely. And in case you are wondering about the size, the box measures about 6″ long, 2.75″ wide, and 1.5″ deep. Well, they were definitely a hit at our party so we wanted to share our box template with all of you! We hope you will find them useful to hold all kinds of Halloween party treats, favors, or candy. And if you would like to try our skeleton brownie idea, we have the instructions for it down on the second half of this page. We hope they will be a hit at your party too!
• Scissors
• Double-sided tape or glue
• Paper clips (optional)
First, choose which lid you would like to use. You have the choice between the lid that says “Death by Chocolate” or there is a plain lid that only says “R.I.P.” if you don’t intend on filling the box with some kind of chocolate.
Once you have decided, print out the PDF file of the “Death by Chocolate” lid or the plain lid on white cardstock.
Cut along the solid black lines and fold on the black dotted lines.
Then print out the coffin bottom on white cardstock as well. The bottom goes with either lid.
Glue or tape each tab to the inside of the box. If you are using glue, you may want to use paper clips to hold the tabs in place while the glue dries. We used double-sided tape just because it is much faster. Your box is now complete! Wasn’t that easy!? Now fill with chocolate candy or a brownie skeleton for some spooky Halloween fun for all your little goblins.
For The Brownie…
If you would like to put a brownie inside each treat box as shown in the picture, here is what you need to do:
First, bake the brownies according to the instructions on the box. An important tip is to line the pan with parchment paper. Leave about 2” of extra parchment paper on both sides. This way you will be able to easily lift the brownies out of the baking dish and cut them as needed when they have cooled.
Once the brownies have cooled, pull them out of the pan using the extra parchment paper on the sides and set them on a wire rack to cool. Print out the Brownie/Parchment template (PDF file) (which also includes the parchment template as explained below). Cut out this template and use it as a guide for cutting out the brownies once they have cooled completely. This way, your brownies will fit nicely into the boxes. You should be able to get 4 brownies if you are using an 8” x 8” pan.
Once the brownies have been cut out, draw on the skeleton. You will need a tube of white frosting to do this. The skeleton can be as simple or complex as you want to make it. If you like the look of our skeleton, use the picture as a guide to copy. We just used a simple round tip on the tube of white frosting.
Now before you place the brownies in the boxes, you will want to line the treat boxes with parchment paper as well, so the boxes don’t get greasy. We have provided a template for this as well! Print and cut out the Brownie/Parchment template if you haven’t already, and trace it onto the parchment paper. This way the paper will form nicely to the box, protecting the bottom and sides. This part does not have to be exact, but the template should provide a good guide for the correct size of parchment paper.
After the skeletons have been made, carefully place a brownie with parchment paper into each box. Now these ghoulish homemade party favors are ready to scare up some fun for Halloween.
